Over the last few days, a rarely checked email account got hundreds of spam bounces reported to it.
It took a little investigating to see that the emails were returns from Joomla registrations and there were several hundred new account registrations. Why? Because I allowed anyone at all to create an account and it would send that email a confirmation message saying "Hello <your name>". The Russians put an entire sentence and a link to some porn site as the user name! I decided to turn off new registrations.
